Breath came slow and easy as the lone wanderer wove his way through the trees. Leaves rustled around him, whispering secrets among themselves. The flaming pelt of the stallion burned brightly against the lush greenery that surrounded him. Just ahead, golden brown eyes saw a broad clearing. He picked his way through the thick vegetation, curious. Emerging onto the vast field, Pyrios took in the magnificent view in wonderment. It was more than a clearing, it was a secret haven, lush and perfectly capable of nourishing an entire herd. A slender network of creeks fed into a large pond that glittered in the morning sun, its surface rippled by the cool breeze that blew over it. A powerful mountain loomed not far off. It and the thick forest offered seclusion and protection.
Pyrios raised his refined muzzle, testing the air for the scent of any equine who might lay claim to this Eden. He sensed nothing. Taking a deep breath, the stag issued a challenging bugle, demanding a fight from any who might stake the land as their own. He stood sentinel a moment, listening for any return. With nothing heard, the stallion cantered deeper into the lands. He took a drink of water and rolled, cleaning his pelt of the dust that had hidden its luster. Content for the moment, he settled to tearing up several bites of grass. Three days he would remain here, watching for any returning challenge. In three days, if no other should reveal themselves as ruler of the land, he would assume the position.
