Full Name: Harlow
Nickname: Harley
Breed: American Mustang
Height: 15.3 hands hight
Gender: Gentleman
Appearance: A body of pale brown and banners of soft black mark the first image of Harlow that you see. Harlow is quite masculine, with a strong jaw and chiseled face. His small, sculpted ears rest high on his crown. A fine layer of muscle rest under his skin. Eyes of deep honey rest on his broad face and gaze out at a world with compassion and understanding. For the most part, Harlow is very pretty to look at and to watch. His gaits are all rhythmic and ground covering and balanced, but there's an very subtle hitch in the way he moves. His right rear foot is turned out slightly. There is a very long, ugly scar along his pastern, a reminder of a long ago accident that made him adjust the way of his movement. Today you barely notice the limp, as he hides it well.
Harlow is no incredible giant, or epically muscled body builder or a fiery stud. Harlow is very plain and very ordinary, but there in lay his beauty. Remarkably unnoticeable and easily overlooked, Harlow has his special and unique qualities to make up for his lack in appearance.
Age: 4 summers
Personality: You can stare at the cover of the book, but the story will never read itself. Harlow is quiet and fairly shy, but he is indeed a friend worth fighting to gain. Behind his social awkwardness lies his enormous personality. Full of kindness and bursting with compassion and empathy for the world, Harlow is a very feelings oriented person. Within his little body he holds all his joys and forgets all his fears. Wise far beyond his years, he may say a few cryptic things every now and then, but he wishes well for all that he knows, even if they rub him the wrong way.
To friends he is everything the could ask for. He is the keeper of their secrets, the listener of their worries and their fears, and their rationality when they are too confused to make decisions for themselves. He is the one they can run to and scream and cry and he will stand their quietly and take it. He is a very old soul and enjoys very simple things. Perhaps thats why he's so easily overlooked? He is no adventurer. He does not seek out danger, or a fight. He would rather resolve every conflict with a peaceful discussion than actually cause physical harm to another.
History: Harlow was born in a very small herd somewhere in the midwestern valleys. His parents were kind and gentle and raised him to be the same way. As a foal he was inquisitive and curious about everything from the butterflies to the waterfalls, to the buffalo, to the panther. He always wondered why everything was the way it was. He wondered what the purpose was for everything and why it did things the way it did. He always wanted to know the answer to anything - that was just Harlow.
As a yearling he was not exceedingly brave. The other yearlings would tease him for being so careful and cautious about everything, but that was just his nature. He would not roughhouse with the other colts, but he would prefer to wander and chase the butterflies or poke the grasshopper with his nose. His mother encouraged his gentle nature, knowing all too well how many young gents turned out. Winter was a dangerous time for yearlings, and Harlow learned that lesson the hard way. A very young, very foolish, and very hungry mountain cat pounced on him. His young claws left shallow cuts on Harlow's flanks, but did little damage to the rest of him. In a very desperate attempt, the young cat bit hard and deep on Harlow's right hind paster and twisted it, trying to drag him away. The young colt kicked and fought and finally pulled himself free, but his leg was badly hurt. He would learn to live with the injury and correct the problems it had caused, but it took time and patience and great care to make it as right as possible. Harlow took the time and finally achieved a recovery point at which it was as if he had never even been hurt.
As a two year old, Harlow was seen by his father as a disappointment. He was not very strong or very kingly or even very protective of anything. He was quiet and shy and reserved and would rather go wandering by the creek than take part in the herd politics. He was often pushed around and rarely stood up for himself. He lack the fire of a leader, and that upset Harlow's father, but Harlow saw it as a positive. He was very much unlike any other fellow and he enjoyed being quite different and quite ordinary.
Eventually a new leader came to the herd, and knowing what was probably going to happen, Harlow took his leave of his family after he said his goodbyes. Being free is very different from what Harlow had expected, but he's very happy.
