Nuri I will run, I will dance--
Nuri and Demon plodded their way through the soggy lands of Sobibor. The storm that had come had been a bit of an anticlimax when it actually happened. It had rained for maybe a minute or two but then it had stopped making for a much easier journey for the slave mare. A fact Demon could not be enjoying.
Nuri plodded obediently after her new master, not a trace of the fiery slave she had been before being put into the cage. She could still remember those bars burning her with their damp coldness. Nuri shivered at the thought, but fought to gain control of her body. She wished for Demon to see only a strong, subservient slave. Nothing more, especially not a threat. For the mare might be sweet and innocent during the day, but when night came she always turned into a conniving sneak. It was something about the way she could blend into the darkness with her coat's coal black color. Since it had no sheen to it, no glint or sparkle betrayed her once she took to the shadows. She became a Shadow. Shadow...that would be a good nickname, thought the mare to herself.
Nuri looked up curiously at the horizon, and then fought to hide a smile as she realized it was almost night already. It had taken them sometime to navigate through the heavy rain and afterword the mud had been a bit of a problem. Not because the surefooted mare had trouble getting through it, but because of all the animals who got in their way. Nuri snorted as she thought of the pitiful slave trains making their way to auction rock. It wasn't an uncommon sight to see an animal's dead carcass on the side of the major pathways. Nuri had kept her head down focusing on the road not wanting to see the slaves. It reminded her too much of her own journey. And yet what she couldn't see she heard, even with her ears pinned hard against her skull.
Nuri shook her head making her chain rattle. She didn't want to think of those things anymore, besides it was almost night...almost night. The best time, Nuri's favorite time.

Demon
As usual, the journey back from Auction Rock was silent and to his dismay the rain that had once seemed so foreboding was nothing more than a shower. It was a shame Nuri had not had to suffer on her first journey with Demon but at the same time he knew that she had been built to withstand tough conditions for she was a runner and when it came to a race, a slave had no choice about running or not due to it not being sunny or cool enough. Chances were she would have kept pace with him either way.
Only a few had crossed their path on the journey home and as soon as they branched away from the well-trodden tracks of the main road none at all were seen for Niaphell was not a homely place that welcomed weary travelers and guests. It was out of everyone's way and the two black figures had to travel several miles through the wild canyons before the land even began to alter to boggy ground. As soon as the first several trees of the forests of Niaphell appeared, Demon let out a sigh and took a quick glance into the sky. Despite their brisk trot they had arrived just before nightfall and though Nuri was still naive of what this forest was capable of Demon was well aware that the final stage of their journey would have to be quick.
Tugging her chain, Demon spoke for the first time in hours. "We must hurry. When night falls so does the fog and then finding my way will become particularly difficult. And you don't want to get lost in these woods, mare. Especially with anger like mine." He smiled maliciously and then started forwards quickly though if Nuri was concentrating she would have seen his movements were with care. Though Demon had walked this path many times it was narrow and near undetectable. To rush forwards as he wanted to do would have been foolhardy and foolish since the forest of Niaphell was not to be taken lightly. In it's depths there were cliffs and slopes made slippery by the dense fog of the night and bushes with thorns that cut smooth lines on the flanks of the unsuspecting. Only an imbecile or a horse driven mad would attempt to tackle the forests during the night without a clue of the paths that led out.
As they reached the depths of the forest, Demon's stride became more urgent. Through the narrow slits in the canopy he could see the sky dimming as the sun began to fall. Already a light mist was gathering and Demon did not take pleasure in the thought of attempting to navigate through the forest when all was dark. He had no doubt that would cause him more pain than Nuri.

Nuri Night has come--
As the two horses approached the forest of Niaphell, it reminded Nuri much of her first journey with her master Volatile. That had been quite interesting for then Nuri had been weak from many months of forced starvation by her first master. Nuri's face grew dark as she remembered those terrible days. She eyed her new master wondering if he would be better or worse than that first master. Nuri didn't think anyone could be worse than him, but then again Nuri had been wrong before. The mare decided to tread carefully with this master.
They started forward through the forest Demon's warning words hanging heavily around them,
"We must hurry. When night falls so does the fog and then finding my way will become particularly difficult. And you don't want to get lost in these woods, mare. Especially with anger like mine."
They started on the path, Demon stepping carefully and Nuri following closely behind. This part of the trip looked almost exactly the same as the time she traveled with Volatie.
How odd, Nuri though to herself. She gazed around the forest intently her sharp eyes memorizing each detail. She wasn't the type of slave who always dreamed of running away, but she knew that if this master was worse than her first and Jasper, she would run and never look back. She would rather die in these treacherous woods than stay with someone that cruel. She made sure however that her looking was subtle. No need to get off on the wrong hoof with Demon. One thing Nuri knew for sure, however, she would make sure no one ever tricked her again. Her eyes burned like black liquid fire as she remembered that golden devil Jasper. If she ever got the chance she would murder that fallen angel. He would never see what was coming.
It would have to be at night though, for in the day is where he thrives, but the night belongs to me, oh yes it belongs only to me... thought Nuri wildly, a small wicked smile crawling over her face.
Already the night's dark tendrils were taking over the sweet mare's soul and wrapping it up like a dark Christmas present, with their treacherous thoughts of vile and evil things. Nuri never knew why the night had this effect on her, but she never bothered wondering. If she were human she would think of it as a Jekyl and Hyde thing, but she's a horse so...what can one say?

Demon A chill wind blew through the forest blowing the now thick mist into the eyes of Demon though he didn’t blink. Speed was of the essence now and with every minute that went by the rare dapples of light that struggled through the thick foliage began to dim more and more. Demon’s pace became quicker and quicker as the fog began to creep in clinging to the ground as he became more and more agitated. Once or twice he almost veered off the path, the ground shrouded in fog, though he was able to catch himself before he went too far. For a second the temptation to get his new slave to help him entered his mind though he pushed it out. If she decided to betray him now then it would cost critical time and at the moment he couldn’t afford it.
Looking around Demon caught sight of a large grey rock dotted with soaking grey moss and despite it’s sharp and scary appearance it brought a bit more cheer to his heart. They were not far now and as long as Nuri did not do anything too stupid they would come out fine from the woods of Niaphell. His pace relaxed slightly though it still remained fairly quick. For the first time since their entrance he sneaked a quick glance at the slave behind him but he dared not let his eyes stray from the path too long. From what he had seen though she was observing her surroundings thoroughly though more than anything this was a nuisance to Demon. If she dared try to escape that was one of his days wasted all because of one stubborn slave. It was also one death that could have been his. How long had it been since he had snuffed out a life? Too long in his opinion and if she was going to make a break for it then he might as well kill her now so he could gain at least a little pleasure of use out of her.
Finally they broke free of the woods though the fog had taken over the central clearing and it was still hard to see. For a second Demon took in a satisfied breath though he dared not relax yet. There was still the matter of finding the caves that would provide them shelter from the fog. Tugging Nuri’s chain, he strode forwards into the fog gruffly snorting, ”Follow me.”. Demon didn’t know the exact direction of the caves he found though there was always the option of following the borders of the forest if worse came to worse. Besides, now that they were out of the woods there weren’t any surprises.
