Two years ago millions of Americans watched as the clock struck midnight and these
fateful words spread across their television screens:
REGISTRATION BECOMES LAW
What followed this announcement was a bloody civil war between the superheroes who
had for so long fought side-by-side to protect the country from all threats foreign,
domestic, and extraterrestrial. On one side were the forces of Captain America who
believed that forcing superheroes to register their identities and work for the
government would only hinder their abilities and put civilians at further risk.
On the other was Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, who led heroes who believed
that at time for accountability had come. This mind set came in the wake of the
Stamford tragedy in which untrained and inexperienced young heroes going by the
team name the New Warriors had confronted dangerous escaped metahuman criminals
and lost with disastrous results. Despite well meaning on both sides, the heroes
were locked in a deadly battle and divisions grew amongst these former friends.
In the end, Tony Stark's pro-registration forces won after Captain America gave
up, abhorred by the collateral damage their conflicts were causing. Perhaps the
two sides could have reconciled but Captain America was assassinated on the way
to face trial for his actions. His death left the heroes divided but a new era
had already dawned in the superhero world.
WELCOME TO STAMFORD, CT
All metahumans and acting vigilantes in the country were not now bound by law to
register with SHIELD and work with them. Refusal to do so made you a fugitive of
the law and could get you locked up in the infamous 42 Prison. Everyone - regardless
of how long they had been in the field - is required to spend a period of time
training at Camp Hammond. The camp was built on the ruins of the elementary school
that served as ground zero for the Stamford Tragedy. There's blood in that dirt
on the parade ground and the townspeople don't ever let the heroes forget it.
They constantly are protesting at the gates and no one with ties to Camp Hammond
should expect a warm welcome if they venture in to town. Which is why the high
school age trainees go to school under assumed identities. Consider it practice
for the rest of their lives. The Stamford folks have a reason to be angry; the
influx of heroes has correlated with an influx of villains - and not only those
who are training to serve as government sanctioned superheroes to get out of jail.
I'm talking the real deal. The big bads. The Minutemen, a group of young people
from Stamford who hate the heroes are doing their best to run them out of town
through vandalism and assault. But it looks like it's hopeless. Everyone is here
for the long haul and no one is prepared to back down.
It's too bad for all of those government trainees who would just rather be back
at home watching this all on the news like everyone else. Too bad for them because
now they are all just...
