It was at almost midnight that the great golden stag weaved his way through the forest that bordered this territory. Despite the mist, he seemed to know his way, possibly instinctively. Slowly, carefully, he breathed in, appraising the scents his great flared nostrils took in. There were old smells, dead smells, and the occasional transient trail he happened across, some old, some newer, none recurring. This was good - it meant the area was empty, at least of permanent habitation. There was no trace of the sickness in the air.
Toxikk knew from the other masters' chatter that this place was called Niaphell, and was an easily defended land, if he could muster up the numbers. He wondered briefly why it was unclaimed, but banished the thought. It was better to think it was just sitting there waiting for him - fate, if you will.
The massive golden horse moved slowly, testing the footing before moving his weight forwards. He did not know the area, and could not see where he was going. It would probably be better to wait until morning, when the mist was said to disappear, but Toxikk was not one to stop when he was so close to such a prize. Niaphell was said to be as close to paradise as a horse was likely to find since the sickness. It was a chance Toxikk was not about to pass up.
Something - the noble horse wasn't sure what - told him that the trees were thinning; that he was getting nearer to his destination. His steps quickened, but he did not break into his massive, loose, swinging trot. Not yet - not while he was still within the trees. There were too many dangers present, until he was out in the clearing.
Without much more warning than that, he moved out of the tree line and lifted his enormous head as high as his neck would allow, to find that the thick fog, which would have completely blinded a smaller horse, came up to his chin when he held his head at its highest limit.
The great golden maw parted, not to sing the usual sweet lyrics, but to scream a harsh order to the skies. "This land of Niaphell hereby belongs to me. If any horse wishes to challenge my claim, speak up now."
The deep bass of the massive stallion's voice echoed off the faraway mountains, power and authority ringing strong in every syllable. Toxikk stood, waiting, head still high as ever. This land was made for him, it seemed. Its perfection and ease of defence only added to its many benefits. The only downside, the thick fog, was not much of a downside. He could see over it, which meant it did not blind him, and he had as long as he needed to get to know the territory. Now, if this did not come to a fight, now all he had to do was move his so far single slave into the territory.

Words: 500 Thoughts: My muse is OK today... Has been better, but has been much much worse.
