A family of five, only one thing keeps them together; horses. The family owns a stable, and the three kids started riding before they could crawl. Nathan, Cassie, and Brett Hills were the smartest of their class, and they all loved riding. But as they grew older, they seemed to grow apart. Brett took to other activities while Cassie and Nathan, often known as Nate, stuck with riding. As Cassie and Nathan grew up around the barn, Brett didn’t visit often. They only saw him at home, which wasn’t that often that they were all their. But sometimes Brett did come to the barn, when he was dying of boredom. So they grew up like that, amazing riding skills and brains yet not always putting them to use.
But don’t you think they’ll want to know that their adopted? Christy asked her husband Tim as they both watched a girl and a boy, twins, asleep in small beds at the home of their house. Of course they will, but we won’t tell them for a while. We just need to have them grow up being normal. Tim said thoughtfully, his mind wandering as he watched the twins roll over sleepily. I do think we should adopt just one more, maybe one a bit older to help out on the farm earlier, don’t you think? Tim asked his wife, running a hand through his hair with a slight yawn. Yes, that wouldn’t be half bad. We can talk about it in the morning, though. Good night, Cassie. Good night, Brett. You’ll have a big brother soon, don’t worry. With that they left the room, the two whispering on their way out.
Within days they had a little boy. He was a year older than the twins, his name Nathan. Nathan James Hills. Of course they’d call him Nate sometime soon, but not right now. Nathan was good enough for now. The plus about Nathan was that he was really related to Cassie and Brett, but had been owned by their real family for a year. Their real family was famous for riding, so Nate had a head start. He’d been riding before he could crawl, but that didn’t mean the other two couldn’t catch up.
16 Years Later
Nate stood outside the arena, attempting to hold back a yawn as he watched a younger student ride named Jessica. Good, Jess. Now push down your heels just a little bit and pick up your hands so they aren’t touching the saddle. Nate called out, his voice echoing in the empty arena as he watched the 10 year old struggle to do what she was asked.
Your often to hard on her, Nate. Cassie said, coming up behind him with a frown. She hated how harsh her brother could be sometimes, especially on little kids. Shush, Cassie. She’ll have to learn sometime, otherwise she won’t be able to do anything else. Nate’s voice was hushed, but Cassie could still hear the slight edge in it. Sometimes I think you get into your perfectionist stage when you teach. But anyways, have you seen Mom or Dad? Cassie asked, brushing her hair away from her face as she noted that Jessica did do what Nate had asked. She pondered the fact that she didn’t do it with her last week, but forgot about it as Nate answered. Uh, I think they went out to the tack shop to grab a new bit. Cassie nodded, still deep in thought as she watched her older brother walk into the ring slowly, his eyes darting around the girl and her horse. I’m going to call them, Nate! She called out, watching her brother hardly nod before muttering something to Jessica. He had the touch sometimes; it was the touch that Cassie was jealous for.
As Cassie walked outside the barn to call their parents, she was startled at the sight she saw. Police cars parked up against the side of the barn, making Cassie almost drop her phone before discovering where they were. Can I help you? Her voice almost shook as she asked the police men; she would later discover their names were Matt and Chris. They looked over to her, glanced at each other and nodded and then turned back to her. You are Cassie Hills? Cassie’s eyes went wide and she nodded slowly, she was already nervous. Is there a Nathan Hills here? Once again Cassie nodded and then jogged back inside, returning a few moments later with Nate at her side.
Good day, officers. He said, attempting not to frown at the fact of why they were here. But apparently Chris and Matt weren’t here for small talk, they wanted to get out of here fast. Can we come in? Nate nodded and lead them inside, shrugging in return to Cassie’s questioning looks.
Your parents are dead. They left you the stables and all of their money. That was pretty much all Cassie heard them say. A tear rolled down her face and she felt Nate gently wipe it away with his hand, stroking her hair gently for a moment before he nodded and he and the police left the room; she was here with just Brett. Brett seemed shocked but not like Cassie. He just stood their blankly leaning upon the wall, hardly blinking. In the distance Cassie could hear Nate bid good day to the police men and thank them for their time before returning inside. He set a paper down on his cluttered desk and stared at it before shaking his head in disbelief. We were adopted. Cassie and Brett and then me…Were hardly even related…Some how I was a year old when they adopted me from our real parents; Martín Hardoy. I had already started riding and you two had just been born…This can’t be happening. Nate put his head in his hands, his elbows on the desk as he faded deep into thought. They owned a stable by themselves. This was a mess.
Two Months Later
Cassie get up! Nate called into her room, flipping the light switch on while shaking his head. Your going to be late to teach Maddie her lesson again! He warned before shaking his head and walking off, grabbing his phone and stuffing it into his back pocket before he jogged down to the barn in the dusk of the morning. As he pulled up the double doors at the end of the barn he saw the horses put their heads over their half stalls and nicker a greeting. Hey guys. It’s warm today! How about baths? Nate said to them, grinning as they all seemed to sulk back into their stalls at the mention of the word bath. He needed to do bills today, that’s what he needed to do. With a sigh he opened the other set of doors and then headed into the office, sitting down and starting to flip through pages.
It’d been two months since their parents had died and they discovered that they were all adopted yet still related. It hadn’t changed much, only now Nate spent a lot of his time down at the barn and he had dropped out of school early with advice from a lot of teachers to do so. He knew more than most of the teachers, and inless he wanted to be a doctor there really wasn’t a point to stay in school. He needed to take care of Brett and Cassie; that was his life goal.
