The wee hours of dawn heralded a thick, pearly mist that rolled down the green hills and drifted over the placid surface of the lake, and there its wisps undulated and capered like phantoms. An eerie stillness heavily cloaked the wooded area, save for a few crickets that ardently continued their serenade to the night; the songbirds had yet to arouse themselves from their slumber in the trees, but they too would raise their natural harmonies in praise of the new day. The sky was overcast with leaden, roiling clouds, an announcement of the storm to come; and there hung in the frigid air a tangible damp and electric charge, as trillions of microscopic electrons collided with other elements. The occasional low rumble of thunder would roll through the ravines, the growling of a provoked beast yet unleashed.
The wolf could feel the raw energy emanate through his very being, making the hair on his back bristle. His yellow eyes turned heavenward at the chaotic storm clouds, assessing how long it would be until the downpour began. He judged about an hour, which provided him more than enough time to complete the task he had set out for.
His large paws thudded softly against the cool soil as the dark beast loped at a leisurely pace through the wood, weaving dexterously through the trees on his downward course toward the lake. The air whistled piercingly in his ears as he ran, a black shadow against the dull gray backdrop of the horizon. All four of his powerful limbs hit the earth in one fluid, rhythmic motion, propelling him forward with grim but focused intent; desire gnawed at his chest once more, spurring him on at an even faster gait until he came to a sudden halt on the sandy bank of the lurid water. But the lake held almost no interest for the wolf, for lo, his fierce gaze raked the soaring granite walls of the castle.
Greed shone in the warg's fiery golden eyes, both his triangular ears cocked forward as the burning curiosity kindled in his chest. A cocktail of putrid scents permeated the area, telltale signs of pack-life, but none of that concerned him in the slightest. This was his destiny; it lay within the castle, and he had only to reach the long abandoned human settlement... and claim it.
